World No Tobacco Day 2019

May 31st is World No Tobacco Day

The theme this year is “tobacco and lung health” and it focuses on the impact of smoking on lung health.

At the NL Smokers’ Helpline, we want to encourage you to promote World No Tobacco Day as a time to increase awareness about quit-smoking services that are available and encourage people to take action towards quitting tobacco (or reducing their daily smoking).

  • Consider setting May 31st as your quit day, or a day to focus on reducing your smoking.
  • Get prepared by speaking to your healthcare provider about smoking cessation aids that may be right for you.
  • Get motivated by consider YOUR reasons for quitting, for ex. think about how great you will feel knowing that you’re doing this amazing thing for your health, or focus on how proud your family will be, or add up the money you will save.
  • Have a look at the various smoking cessation services that can help.  Browse through the Smokers’ Helpline website and consider signing up for one of the various programs that are available such as texts or emails.  Review articles to help build your own personalized quit plan.  
  • Remember, the contact information to reach the Helpline in St. John’s, NL, is right on the front of your cigarette pack.  When you call from this province, you connect directly to your provincial quitline.

Consider ways that you can promote smoking cessation in your setting.  Encourage and support people to quit smoking by:

  • Post up Smokers’ Helpline materials (posters, pamphlets, magnets) as a reminder about the benefits of living smokefree and to promote available quit-smoking supports.
  • Share information about the Helpline by email or through social media channels.
  • Contact the Helpline to schedule an information session or display booth for clients or staff. 
  • Help people connect to the Smokers’ Helpline through referring them the Helpline’s CARE Referral Program.  With their consent, submit their contact information online or via fax.  The Helpline will then contact them by phone within a few days to discuss quit-smoking supports and programs that are available.
