World No Tobacco Day 2020 - Sunday, May 31st

Each year on May 31st, the World Health Organization along with partner organizations in countries across the globe mark World No Tobacco Day.

This is a key time to promote messages about the harmful impacts of smoking tobacco and exposure to secondhand smoke, as well as to encourage and support individuals in quitting smoking.

Quit-Smoking Supports Available

Studies show that many smokers are interested in quitting smoking. We encourage you to make this World No Tobacco Day the day you decide to take steps towards quitting! 

If you’re thinking about quitting–even if you’re not ready to quit completely right now–we encourage you to connect with the NL Smokers’ Helpline, a program of the Lung Association, based in St. John’s, NL.

The Smokers’ Helpline offers a variety of services to help individuals create their own personalized quit plan and move forward.

You’re welcome to connect by calling the Helpline.  The phone number (1-866-366-3667) is right on your cigarette pack (within the Health Canada graphic health warning), and when you call from this province (Newfoundland and Labrador), you will connect directly to the Helpline based in St. John’s, NL.  When you call, a trained Helpline quit coach will give you information about the services available and will review some approaches, tips and strategies that have been proven to be effective.  Some of the common topics discussed include: smoking cessation medications, managing withdrawal and coping with cravings and triggers.

There is no pressure to quit right away.  The Helpline simply provides information, tips and tools to help you move forward in your quit journey so that you’re better prepared and more confident about quitting when you’re ready.

There are so many benefits to quitting smoking at any time.  And right now may be the perfect time to access quit-smoking support in order to protect and preserve your lung health.
